I recall from some discussion, that the quote refers to 'fantasy vs reality' - so - having said that, I would say that Macbeth thought that the fantasy and the reality (of the poor lady's demise) were equal or not different enough to distinguish between.
In other words, he didn't think it through.
But isn't that an interesting topic? fantasy vs reality...that is to say that wouldn't it be nice if the two were actually equal?
